Thailand is located on the Southeast Asian mainland south of China. It is bordered by Myanmar (Burma) to the north and west, Laos to the north and east, Cambodia to the southeast and Malaysia at its southern tip.
Thailand has an extended coastline, with the Gulf of Thailand on the east and the Andaman Sea on the west. Many beautiful islands with white sand beaches and fantastic limestone formations create ideal diving and boating destinations.
Bangkok, the capital city, is the top Southeast Asian destination for foreign visitors and a gateway for exploring Thailand and other neighboring countries.
Phuket on the Andaman Sea is the largest island in Thailand and one of the top destinations for international travellers. With its beautiful beaches, good infrastructure and cosmopolitan mix of international restaurants and hotels, Phuket draws millions of visitors every year. It is also a prime jumping off point for exploring nearby islands such as Phi Phi and the Similans.
Koh Samui in the Gulf of Thailand is also a top island destination, with direct flights from Bangkok and a number of charter flights. Less developed than Phuket, Koh Samui is suffering some growing pains as it struggles to keep ahead of its popularity.
Chiang Mai in the far north of Thailand enjoys a somewhat cooler climate than urban Bangkok and is notable for its great prices on handicrafts from hill tribes. Popular for jungle treks, bamboo rafting and elephant treks, Chiang Mai is also a great destination for learning about the many cultures of Thailand. |
