This area is shopping and entertainment central for locals and visitors. The one-block area of Siam Square is a magnet for young people. Siam Paragon and Siam Discovery Centre will fill your craving for designer shops and name brands. For a taste of local mall shopping and teen styles, nearby Mah Boon Krong (MBK) is an interesting and challenging rabbit warren of bargains.
SkyTrain lines conveniently converge in this area, making it the hub of mass transit travel and a natural gathering spot for locals and tourists. The streets of the Siam Square area are crowded with restaurants, shops, cinemas, cyber cafes, and topped off with Hard Rock Café. At night young people flock to Siam Square to party and people watch.
After the gritty, urban feel of Bangkok, the gleaming edifices of Siam Center and Siam Discovery shopping centres fronted by the SkyTrain tracks are either a welcome respite or a shock to visitors recently returned from rafting on upland rivers or basking on a white beach elsewhere in the kingdom. Siam Center is stuffed full of name brand shops. The Paragon Department Store has a great selection of Thai products on the 4th floor that makes shopping for quality souvenirs easy and stress-free, especially for visitors pressed for time.
Be sure to check out the gourmet restaurants and food outlets in the basement of Paragon. The local foods artfully and hygienically prepared in one section are a great introduction to Thai street food and the ingredients are listed for your convenience. You’ll do a better job experimenting with the street food if you have a clue what to look for.
Ocean World, cinemas, and other entertainment options make Siam Center and Siam Discovery a great destination for families, as there is plenty to do for all ages. Other major shopping centres such as Gaysorn Plaza and Narayan Phand are also nearby. You can spend days shopping in this area and not get to everything. |
