Located on the north side of the city, Don Muang Airport handles only local flights since the opening of Suvarnabhumi International Airport. Conveniently situated within the city limits, staying near Don Muang airport is convenient if you have short hops to destinations within Thailand during your stay.
Several fine museums in the area offer some interesting and unique learning opportunities. The National Science Museum, located in Future Park, is six floors of exhibits that explore and explain all areas of science. Interactive exhibits and displays are interesting for all ages. The Royal Thai Air Force Museum, located behind the airport, has one of the world's finest collections of rare and antique military craft on display. Exhibits include simulators, electronic aviation devices, and memorabilia. The gift shop is fully stocked with aviation gear and souvenirs.
Reasonably priced golf courses are a stone's throw from the airport. You can get your links fix at the Royal Thai Army Golf Course with its old and new courses, or the Royal Thai Air Force Golf Course.
South of the airport along the Chao Phraya River is the extensive Chatuchak Park, home of the Chatuchak Weekend Market. The king of markets, Chatuchak covers 35 acres and contains more than 15,000 shops and stalls. Clothes, home décor, antiques, souvenirs, pets, plants, army surplus, handicrafts, and much more can all be found here. Food is plentiful from pushcarts, stalls, and restaurants. Bring water and a fan, and prepare to be overwhelmed.
For a change of pace, head for the cool and peaceful Queen Sirikit Park at one end of Chatuchak Park, with its fountains and lotus ponds. At one corner is the delightful Children's Museum that will keep youngsters and oldsters alike entertained and intrigued for hours on end. |
